April is Confederate History Month of Remembrance
Essay by Calvin E. Johnson, Jr.
April is an important month in America's history. The Great Locomotive Chase, where Union spies attempted to steal the Confederate Locomotive "The General" and destroy rail lines and bridges, took place on April 12, 1862. The month of April has become to be known as Confederate History and Heritage Month.
Please share this story with your family.

The Congress of the United States has officially in past years recognized America's war of, 1861 to 1865, as the War Between the States. This tragic war claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of brothers, uncles and husbands. Though they were enemies on the battlefield, after the war, the men of blue and gray sponsored reunions at such places as Gettysburg. The soldier told war stories while the United States and Confederate flags flew briskly in the warm summer breeze.

Why do some schools ignore the teaching of American history? Boys and girls once learned about American soldiers who for over 200 years marched off to war. The church hymn book once included "Onward Christian Soldiers." The young people read about: George Washington, Robert E. Lee and Booker T. Washington. Northern and Southern children stood up proudly to sing patriotic songs from a standard song book that included "Dixie".

After the end of the War Between the States, Northern and Southern women formed memorial organizations. They made sure all soldiers were given a Christian burial and a marked grave. Memorial Days were begun in many states North and South of the famous Mason-Dixon Line. Confederate graves were also cared for in the North and Union graves in the South. Great monuments were also erected that still cast a giant shadow over many town squares and soldiers' cemeteries across the U.S.A.

April 26, has become to be recognized as Confederate Memorial Day in many states. For over one hundred years the Ladies' Memorial Association, United Daughters of the Confederacy and Sons of Confederate Veterans have held memorial services on or near this day. Other Southern States recognize this day ,which began as Decoration Day, on May 10th and June 3rd. Confederate President Jefferson Davis was born on June 3rd.

April, Confederate History and Heritage Month, is significant as it is the month the War Between the States began (1861) and ended (1865).

Efforts to mark Confederate graves, erect monuments and hold memorial services were the idea of Mrs. Charles J. Williams. It is written that she was an educated and kind lady. Her husband served as Colonel of the 1st Georgia Regiment during the war. He died of disease in 1862, and was buried in his home town of Columbus, Georgia.

Mrs. Williams and her daughter visited his grave often and cleared the weeds, leaves and twigs from it, then placed flowers on it. Her daughter also pulled the weeds from other Confederate graves near her Father.

It saddened the little girl that their graves were unmarked. With tears of pride she said to her Mother, "These are my soldiers' graves." The daughter soon became ill and passed away in her childhood. Mrs. William's grief was almost unbearable.

On a visit to the graves of her husband and daughter, Mrs. Williams looked at the unkept soldiers' graves and remembered her daughter as she cleaned the graves and what the little girl had said. She knew what had to do.

Mrs. Williams wrote a letter that was published in Southern newspapers asking the women of the South for their help. She asked that memorial organizations be established to take care of the thousands of Confederate graves from the Potomac River to the Rio Grande. She also asked the state legislatures to set aside a day in April to remember the men who wore the gray. With her leadership April 26 was officially adopted in many states. She died in 1874, but not before her native state of Georgia adopted it as a legal holiday. It is still officially recognized in Georgia today.

Mrs. Williams was given a full military funeral by the people of Columbus, Georgia and flowers covered her grave. For many years a yearly memorial was conducted at her grave following the soldiers' memorial.

Robert E. Lee said,

Duty is the sublimest word in the English language. Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more. You should never wish to do less."

The South can be proud of their men and women who served this nation from the Revolutionary War to the War in Iraq. It is important to also remember those men and women who defended their homes, families and states during the War Between the States.

Among the gallant women was Captain Sally Tomkins, CSA who was the first woman to be commissioned on either side of the War Between the States. Commissioned by Jefferson Davis, she took care of thousands of soldiers in Richmond, Virginia until the end of the war.

Those who served the Confederacy came from many races and religions. There was Irish born General Patrick R. Cleburne, black Southerner Amos Rucker, Jewish born Judah P. Benjamin, Mexican born Colonel Santos Benavides and American Indian General Stand Watie who was born in Rome, Georgia.

Lest We Forget!

Please contact the Sons of Confederate Veterans or other historical organizations about the events during Confederate History and Heritage Month. Be a part of this month long tribute, in April, to the men and women of Dixie.

A native of Georgia, Calvin Johnson lives near the historic town of Kennesaw, home of the locomotive "The General" from the War Between the States. His email is: cjohnson1861@bellsouth.net.

Letter to the Editor
3/27/2008

It’s a shame to see what history is taught in America’s schools, that the snide behavior that students are taught is acceptable in public forums. A few facts: less than 10 percent of Confederate soldiers ever owned a slave. Large numbers of soldiers weren’t white men at all (like my grandpa): American Indians, Hispanics, (thousands appear on Texas rosters) and even African Americans and women (more than 300 are known to have disguised their sex to enlist). Recommended reading:

The Emancipation Proclamation, which was not issued until the fall of 1862 and didn’t free a soul. Northern slaveholding states and territory retaken by the Union Army are specifically excluded by name in paragraph three.

The Corwin Amendment, which Lincoln offered to South Carolina if she returned to the Union. It would have protected slavery in perpetuity. Several states, notably Virginia, didn’t secede until Lincoln demanded that they furnish troops to invade neighboring states. So much for their fears for slavery. Only a fool would admit that slavery wasn’t a major cause of the war, but it wasn’t THE cause, and most men didn’t fight for that reason. They faced a very bitter decision: Do I fight for the Union, and shoot my family and friends? Or do I defend my home state? Most people wouldn’t side against their loved ones. The majority of citizens were forced into fighting by the choices of greedy politicians ... much like today. And before you scream “neo-Con” at me ... I’m a flaming liberal feminist, and, again, not a white woman.

Columnist has no right to interpret meaning of Confederate flag

Dear editor:

The United States flag flew over many ships that brought African captives to the New World since the 1770s — no Confederate flag ever did. The United States flag oversaw the forcible removal of the Cherokees and other tribes from their ancestral lands — no Confederate flag ever did. The United States flag flew over the troops that massacred Native Americans — no Confederate flag ever did. The United States flag flew over the concentration camps where native-born Americans were interned for the heinous crime of being born of foreign ancestry — no Confederate flag ever did.

The United States flag has been widely used by Kluxers. I invite your attention to the photographic collection found at http://pointsouth.com/csanet/kkk.htm. Worse than that, the United States flag flew over the atrocities committed against Georgians in the 1860s.

In paragraph seven of Jeannie Babb Taylor’s article, she asks the questions, “But is it altogether fitting and proper to continue flying the Confederate flag — and indeed, not just any Confederate flag but the actual battle flag — over public buildings in Georgia today? Can white Georgians claim the right to keep waving that emblem in the face of other Georgians, who experienced attacks and demonstrations, feared lynching, and faced every kind of discrimination?”

I propose the counter-questions. But is it altogether fitting and proper to continue flying the 13-stripe flag over public buildings in Georgia today? Can the successors of those who subjected Georgians to rape, murder and starvation claim the right to keep waving the emblem under which those atrocities were perpetrated — albeit with more stars nowadays — in the faces of Georgians?

The flag that we know as the Confederate battle flag was used by many —but by no means all — Confederate military units during the War for Southern Independence (1861-1865). It was their flag, and they alone had the right to interpret its meaning. When the war was over, the Confederate soldiers became Confederate veterans. They formed an organization known as the United Confederate Veterans. The Confederate battle flag was still their flag and they alone had the right to interpret its meaning.

In 1896, since many of the Confederate veterans were aged, infirm, and dying off, the Sons of Confederate Veterans was formed as the successor organization to the United Confederate Veterans. The legacy and authority of the United Confederate Veterans was transferred to them over the next 10 years. This transfer of power culminated in a speech given April 25, 1906 at New Orleans, La., by Stephen Dill Lee, Confederate lieutenant general and commander-in-chief of the United Confederate Veterans:

“To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we will commit the vindication of the cause for which we fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier’s good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles which he loved and which you love also, and those ideals which made him glorious and which you also cherish. Remember, it is your duty to see that the true history of the South is presented to future generations.”

Since April 25, 1906, therefore, the Confederate battle flag has been the flag of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. They alone have the right to interpret its meaning. They have interpreted its meaning and explained repeatedly that meaning — and it is not hatred, nor is it bigotry. The Confederate battle flag is not the flag of the Kluxers and other malcontents of their ilk. They do not have the right to interpret its meaning. The Confederate battle flag is not the flag of the NAACP. They do not have the right to interpret its meaning.

Taylor does not have the right to interpret its meaning. Her commentary, therefore, is out of order.

A Confederate Soldier’s Prayer

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve;

I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.

I asked for health, that I might do greater things;

I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.

I asked for riches, that I might be happy;

I was given poverty, that I might be wise.

I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men;

I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.

I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life;

I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.

I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I hoped for.

Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.

I am among all men most richly blessed.

The Lincoln Myth

Written by Samuel Ashwood

Recently conducted polls have shown that Americans decisively consider Abraham Lincoln our greatest president. Last week, the birthday of that sixteenth president, who guided the Union to victory in the Civil War, was celebrated. This week, he and other occupants of the Oval Office will be celebrated on President’s Day.Because Lincoln has reached a near-deity status in America, symbolized by the awe-inspiring Lincoln Memorial in Washington, it behooves us to take him under careful consideration. When we take a closer look at Lincoln, his character is not quite so shining as our schools and newspapers would lead us to believe.
For instance, Lincoln is viewed as an early day advocate of racial equality, and the greatest friend the black man ever had. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. Lincoln was long a loud voice in the campaign to deport blacks back to Africa. Furthermore, in the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858, Lincoln offered this bit of wisdom:
I have no purpose to introduce political and social equality between the white and black races. There is a physical difference between the two, which, in my judgment, will probably forever forbid their living together upon the footing of perfect equality; and inasmuch as it becomes a necessity that there must be a difference, I, as well as Judge Douglas, am in favor of the race to which I belong having the superior position. I have never said anything to the contrary.
A close look at Lincoln shows him to be an advocate of the old Whig policies, which he transferred into the Republican Party. Yes, they wanted no more slave states added to the union. But Whig policy was clear that they wanted those states for “free white labor.” In fact, Lincoln’s own home state of Illinois would not permit blacks to reside there.
The Emancipation Proclamation is often cited as Lincoln’s greatest contribution to the cause of freedom and racial equality. Unfortunately for the myth, even a superficial reading of the Proclamation shows that Lincoln only “abolished” slavery in areas of the country where he had no authority; in other words, those portions of territory still under control of the Confederate government in Richmond. Even those portions of the Southern states occupied by Union troops were exempted from emancipation. Slavery could continue there, as well as in slave states that had remained in the union, such as Maryland and Delaware.
Lastly on this matter, one should not ignore the Corwin Amendment, proposed about the time the Southern states began to secede. This amendment would have forever abolished the right of the Federal government to interfere with the institution of slavery. In his inaugural address, Lincoln offered support for the said amendment. The Southern states proved disinterested in returning even on those terms, not under a Lincoln presidency. Lincoln went on to announce in his inaugural that he would not invade the South to abolish slavery, but he would use military force to collect the tariffs.
Abraham Lincoln was, contrary to his portrayal as a freedom fighter, probably the greatest tyrant this nation has ever seen. Lincoln waged war against the opposition press in the North, shutting down newspapers by the dozens that disagreed with his policy. In May of 1864, he ordered General John Dix, “You will take possession by military force, of the printing establishments of the New York World and Journal of Commerce… and prohibit any further publication thereof… you are therefore commanded forthwith to arrest and imprison… the editors, proprietors and publishers of the aforesaid newspapers.” Not only newspapers were attacked. Ohio congressman Clement Vallandigham was deported to the South for speaking out publicly against Lincoln’s policies, including his institution of the first income tax in American history.
But the South in particular would feel the wrath of America’s great humanitarian. Lincoln spoke of “charity towards all, malice towards none,” but his war policies belied his words. Under attack from all quarters, some 50,000 Southern civilians perished, according to widely respected Civil War historian James McPherson. Lincoln approved of the indiscriminate bombardment of cities in the South, as towns like Fredericksburg, Atlanta, and Petersburg would learn to their grief. In border states such as Missouri, terrorization was the order of the day. Men even suspected of Southern sympathy were often imprisoned without charge, and sometimes murdered. Often families of innocent women and children were imprisoned for the crime of being related to Confederate soldiers.
And this is not to even speak of Philip Sheridan’s destruction of the Shenandoah Valley, so complete the general boasted a crow flying over the valley would have to carry his own rations. Six years later, serving his government as an observer with the Prussian Army fighting in France, Sheridan told German chancellor Otto von Bismarck that civilians of a defeated country “must be left nothing but their eyes to weep with.” Clearly Sheridan spoke from experience. Bismarck was duly disgusted.
Sheridan’s practices were far from isolated. Sherman’s famous “March to the Sea” was summed up in the statement, “They took everything that was not red-hot or nailed down.” Rings were torn from the fingers of women, houses and barns were burned, food supplies were stolen or torched, and occasionally helpless women suffered rape from Sherman’s “bummers;” usually black women. Abraham Lincoln is said to have suggested to Sherman that he practice a more humane form of warfare. But never did he lift a finger to enforce such a policy. Furthermore, when one considers that Lincoln is widely known to have been a micro-manager of the war effort, he cannot help but believe Lincoln approved and encouraged the barbaric policies that would have done honor to Genghis Khan.
Modern America has sold its conscience to the Lincoln idol. He is not our greatest president, unless one chooses to rank him as the greatest tyrant. It is time for America to take a realistic view of history, and to pull down the blinds which obscure the reality of our sixteenth president’s nefarious character. History will never suffer from honest scrutiny. But tyrants and dictators might.

Black Man Proud Of Confederate Flag

Many heads turned in Ringgold Wednesday when they saw an African-American man dressed in a Confederate soldier's uniform, carrying a Confederate flag.

It wasn't a joke. H.K. Edgerton came to Ringgold to make a bold statement - he opposes city leader's removing the Confederate flag from the city's flag pole.

Edgerton says the Confederate flag is misunderstood, feared and hated because people are trying to be politically correct - which he says desecrates the honor and real meaning of the Civil War era emblem.

"I'm here because your town council climbed into bed with all the politically correct folks who are practicing social, cultural genocide here in the south land of America," Edgerton said.

Edgerton is marching against that cultural genocide as he calls it, and is getting a warm welcome from people in Ringgold who support his fight for the Confederate flag.

Jim Caldwell meet Edgerton carrying the flag and said "it's history, part of history and it don't need to be swept under the rug."

Edgerton is from Asheville, North Carolina, where he's also the immediate past president of the N.A.A.C.P. there. His visit to Ringgold marks the five-year anniversary of the same march he made from Asheville to Austin Texas - 20 miles a day, six days a week.

He says he has no respect for modern day civil rights activists who as he puts it, trash the Confederate flag.

"Just pointing to those scally-wags like Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton, who climbed into bed with these folks to increase their coffers to continue tainting and disturbing history," Edgerton said.

Two years ago many people packed Ringgold's city hall to protest the move by city leaders to get rid of the Confederate flag. It flies no more on the town poles.

Edgerton says many people don't understand that black men, alongside whites, fought for the Confederacy and the principals it was founded on.

"So here I am, trying to bring an understanding that there was folks who look like me who earned a place of honor and dignity here under this flag. And this flag is just as much for folks who look like me as any white man in the south land of America," Edgerton said.

Prisoners of War at Camp Douglas, 1863

Prisoners of War at Camp Douglas, 1863

A real good view of the prisoners at Camp Douglas click on the image

Soldiers of the 48th Tennessee Infantry at Camp Douglas Il in 1862

Group of 48th veterans circa 1910.

The 48th was one of the first units ever to be incarcerated in hastily prepared Union prison camps. The Federals sent the field grade officers to Fort Warren, Massachusetts, the line officers to Camp Chase Ohio, and the enlisted men to Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois. (The officers were later transferred to Johnson's Island on Lake Erie.) The defeated Tennesseans began their trip north shortly after the surrender on the evening of 16 February. Grant's troops herded their prisoners aboard the steamer Empress. The steamer departed on the seventeenth and arrived at Cairo, Illinois, that night. The trip up the Mississippi was both uncomfortable and unhealthy. Many of the soldiers crowded aboard the Empress were already sick from exposure, poor diet, and frostbite. Sanitary conditions on the vessel were poor. The weather was cold, and the rations consisted of crackers and raw meat. Along the route, Union soldiers gathered to taunt the prisoners. In response, Andrew Campbell reported, "Our men never failed to cheer for Jeff Davis and the Southern Confederacy." At two points along the river, unknown assailants fired shots at the vessel and several prisoners were wounded.

The Empress arrived at St. Louis on 20 February. The Confederates were surprised to find that the citizens of the city demonstrated pro-Southern sympathy by providing gifts of apples, cakes, tobacco, and money. The enlisted men boarded trains for Camp Douglas that evening, while the officers remained aboard other vessels for the next five days. Sympathizers risked insult and arrest to help the prisoners. One woman, who threw apples to the captives, was accosted by
a Union officer who shook his fist in her face. To support her, one of the Confederate officers cut a button off his uniform and tossed it to the woman. When she attempted to retrieve the gift, a Federal guard stepped forward and "thrust his bayonet in front [of her] to push her back." Unimpressed, she simply pushed the bayonet out of the way and retrieved the button.

Historians acknowledge that the prison systems on both sides during the war between the states were poor. The Federal prisons at Camp Chase and Douglas were among the worst. When A. J. Campbell surveyed the filthy, overcrowded conditions at Camp Chase, he thought that he could "with good grace go out and volunteer to be shot."

At Douglas, death stalked the 48th. On 3 March, K. Company lost William Welch and on the ninth a "kind, and most beloved" James Hodges died. The death of Third Sergeant John E. Amis on the twelfth left two small sons fatherless. On the fourteenth a "fair and honest" James Akin passed away. At least forty-five, or seventeen percent of the 270 soldiers known captured at Fort Donelson died while in Federal hands.

As the months of imprisonment worn on, death and sickness became a constant companion. Weekly, soldiers died of pneumonia and consumption. Union guards forced prisoners to stand by while money and personal items were stolen from them. Guards required little provocation to attack unarmed prisoners. At Camp Douglas, sixteen-year old Wilson Trousdale of Company E was bayoneted in the back by a guard. Johnson's Island guards routinely shot or shot at prisoners. Captain Campbell writes, "Everytime I see a villainous Yankee it makes my blood boil to think we are to be shot down like dogs without any provocation whatever and no means of redress. One does not know what minute he will be shot down as we frequently have guns leveled and cocked at us."

In early May, the officers at Camp Chase were transferred to the infamous Johnson's Island aboard the Island Queen. In June the president of the United States Sanitary Commission urged that Camp Douglas be abandoned and burned due to poor sanitary conditions there. Escape attempts were not infrequent. On 23 July, a tall and bearded Allen Adcock from E Company took part in one of Camp Douglas's best known escape attempts. Adcock and several compatriots planned the escape for weeks. Adcock slept with a homemade ladder hidden in his bunk. The group kept delaying their attempt, hoping Adcock's sick brother Robert would improve enough to go with them. Robert, who was afraid to go to the prison hospital, failed to improve. Finally, on the dark and rainy night of the twenty-third, the group made a break for the prison fence. Four of Adcock's friends made it over before the guards discovered them and began to fire. Adcock was not one of the lucky ones and quickly had to make his way back into the barracks. Camp Douglas was "in a commotion." Mackey, who was not with Adcock, wrote "Our Federal excellencies were much alarmed; the cannon fired and general excitement prevailed." The Federals rushed to the barracks looking for prisoners with muddy shoes to indicate they had participated in the escape. Adcock, however, proved too smart for his jailers. He escaped detection because he had the foresight to wear socks over his shoes during his adventure. Adcock's shoes looked as if he had been in his bunk the whole time.

The Rebels did their best to entertain themselves. In the winter there were snowball contests, the "bloody" 48th and the 7th Texas heavily engaged against the 20th Mississippi. The Tennesseans attended church, wrote letters, read Northern newspapers, annoyed the guards, circulated unending rumor, and listened to antisecessionist speeches sponsored by their captors. In the summer, a group of twenty-one prisoners from the 48th pooled their money and had a photo taken. The soldiers in the photo stare seriously, hats cocked to one side or the other. They were young and mostly bearded but some looked too young to shave. They wore various uniforms, kepis, and slouch hats.

By July 1862, rumors that the 48th would be exchanged were prevalent and believed by most. The prisoners believed war news from the South was good and morale in the 48th improved. A small but tough looking Private Joe Rainey let his high morale get him in trouble. When the Illinois Governor paid a visit to Camp Douglas, an impudent Rainey shouted a hurrah for Jeff Davis and The Yankees promptly hauled him off to the guard house.

Just before their exchange in August, the Federals offered the Confederate prisoners a choice: they could accept exchange or they could take the oath of allegiance. At Camp Douglas, 918 opted to take the oath, among them were seventeen from the 48th.

In September 1862 the Federal government exchanged the 48th. One Federal Officer thought the exchange was a mistake. Campbell reports the officer said "all the weakly prisoners had died, the cowardly had taken the oath, and the others would make invincible soldiers."

The officers left their prison on 1 September 1862 and were released at Vicksburg on the 16th. On 3 September, jubilant enlisted soldiers left Camp Douglas and were released on the 23rd. They were in the words of Campbell "relieved of the presence of the hated Yankee once more." Shortly after the exchange sixty-year old Captain George W. Gordon, the well-loved commander of K Company died. The entire regiment mourned his loss. After the enlisted were freed on the twenty-fourth, they were able to spend a few days in Vicksburg. The newly freed soldiers poked around Vicksburg and found it, "A nice place with little to eat."

On the twenty-sixth, the troops boarded "the cars" for a forty-five mile train ride to Jackson, Mississippi. There on 29 September, after seven months of captivity, the 48th was reorganized. The troops elected William Voorhies Colonel, Arron S. Goodwin Lieutenant Colonel, and Andrew Jackson Campbell Major. The reorganization of the 48th created a problem: the Confederate army now had two separate 48th Tennessee Infantry Regiments. One regiment was under Colonel Voorhies serving in Maxey's Brigade, District of Louisiana, Department of Mississippi; the other regiment served under Colonel Nixon in Polk's Brigade, Cleburne's Division, Polk's Corps, Army of Tennessee.
