Jefferson Davis Day Proclamation

WHEREAS, Jefferson Finis Davis was born on June 3, 1808 in Kentucky, this being the 200th anniversary of his birth; and

WHEREAS, Jefferson Finis Davis was U. S. Secretary of War and a U. S. Senator; and

WHEREAS, Jefferson Finis Davis was the only President of the Confederate States of America; and

WHEREAS, Jefferson Finis Davis visited Murfreesboro in December of 1862 to review the Confederate troops; and

WHEREAS, Jefferson Finis Davis was an honored guest of Rutherford County and stayed at historic Oaklands Mansion; and

WHEREAS, Rutherford County Tennessee has long recognized the “War Between the States” history that had such an impact on the County, and is proud of the citizens that endured four years of war;

NOW, THERERORE, I, Ernest G. Burgess, County Mayor of Rutherford County, Tennessee, do hereby proclaim, June 3, 2008 as “ Confederate President Jefferson Davis Day” in Rutherford County, Tennessee and urge all citizens to remember this Great American and Confederate Hero.
